Rainbow Mission and Me
Min Ling
The night of Aug 23, 2008, I received a phone call from an unknown number. I usually do not pick up a call from people whom I do not know. But that night was different, I wasn¡¦t thinking and answered the phone call right away. The caller was from Seattle, U.S.A and specifically wanted to talk to me. His name is Peter Wong and he is a counselor .He told me about how he heard about me and my circumstances from some friends. I was stunned that he wanted to talk to me. How did this come to be? I did not know him. Why did he care for me? I had just had surgery on both of my legs, and my life was in a difficult time. I had a post-surgery check-up in April in 2008. The medical news from the doctor was not good and I felt hopeless. I felt that life seemed to have no meaning to me. I also served at church during this time. So I decided to continue serving even though I was not feeling positive about my life.
We talked over the phone for almost one hour. I truly felt that Peter Wong is an exceptionally kind man who is willing to help others. I am very thankful for Peter¡¦s phone call. He greatly consoled me and encouraged me. We became friends and we keep in touch with each other. Afterwards, I learned more about Rainbow Mission, which is a non-profit organization and serves youth with disabilities and other underprivileged people. Fortunately, one day in the month of July, 2009, I had an opportunity attend a Rainbow mission conference and sharing event in Hong Kong. This was also the first time I met Peter Wong in person.
Through attending this meeting, I learned more about the kind of work Rainbow Mission does in China. I am an individual who has received support from Rainbow Mission, when I was in need. I felt my needs had been met. I did not feel like I was ignored. I was very touched. Rainbow Mission cares about all minority populations such as blind people, CP children, and many others. They help these people create a different life.
June 2011, I represented Rainbow Mission on a visit to Xinyi¡¦s grandma. She was in the hospital and her medical status was not good. Xinyi was still in America and could not come back to visit, but she hoped that her grandma could receive Christ before her grandma passed away. I met up with her grandma and told her the reason for my visit as I was her granddaughter¡¦s friend, she felt very happy after hearing from her granddaughter from far away. It was a short visit, but the grandpa was happy to see me. I did not do anything special, but this visit was meaningful to me. I can serve with Rainbow Mission, and I feel joyful. As an individual with special needs, I can help others even just a few thoughtful words, it means a lot to others.
