Tian Yong's Five RMB

Tian Yong is my friend's sponsored student and I took him to the supermarket trip. I was hoping to get to know him better so that I could tell my friend all about him. It was a fifteen minute walk to the supermarket, he told me about his family and his ambition to become a doctor while we were walking. He was such an optimistic and bright student! In return, I told him about my own family and my three-year-old son.

Each student was given 5 RMB (about $.70) to spend at the supermarket. Tian Yong said he wanted some spicy snacks. Once we found what he wanted, he had 2 RMB left. I asked him, "Other than spicy snacks, what else would you like to buy?" He replied immediately, "I want to buy a small toy." I continued, "What kind of toy?" Cheerfully he answered, "A small toy that your son would like."

I was speechless and deeply touched. Our team traveled to China to share our love, but this young man taught me what true dedication is. Five RMB was his only pocket money, but he was willing to give 40% of it to my son, someone he has never met.

I asked myself, "Can I give 40% of my salary this student?"

Through his unselfish act, Tian Yong showed me the meaning of generosity. I thank God for him. God is good!
