About Us
In the winter of 2003, a social worker from China visited Bosco
Chan and Peter Wong in Redmond, Washington. She challenged them
to bring their knowledge of assistive technology to China to benefit
the needy. They were not sure exactly what they could do, but
decided to go and examine the situation themselves. Right before
Bosco was to leave, he broke his ankle and had to temporarily
use a wheelchair for the first time in his life. While at the
airport in China, he was relieved to find an accessible bathroom.
Unfortunately, the door to the toilet opened inward; he could
wheel himself in, but could not close the door! All he could do
was to push back out, stand up and hop to the toilet. In one small
way Bosco experienced firsthand how 84 million individuals with
disabilities in China struggle through life. He heard of a man
whose face was burned in an accident who could not find employment
because no one in China would hire him because of his disfigurement.
A person cannot be accepted to college if he does not meet a certain
height requirement, and many times the disabled face the same
prejudice. Families in rural areas have a hard time providing
education for their children, and schooling for a handicapped
child is almost unheard of. There is one career choice offered
if you are blind, and that is to be trained as a massage therapist.
Is it no wonder that 80% of the orphans in the welfare homes we
visited are disabled? People with physical problems are too often
seen as a burden on society and therefore are abandoned.
As a result of the first investigatory trip, in 2005 a group
of Chinese Christians formed Rainbow Missions as a faith-based
501(c)(3) non-profit organization set up exclusively for charitable
purposes. Rainbow Missions serves and supports individuals who
are less fortunate and under privileged in China and also identifies
and helps the network surrounding these individuals. The support
network could be family members, teachers, health professionals,
counselors, or institutions..., anyone who reaches out a helping
hand to those in need. By providing services and support, Rainbow
Missions seeks to bring hope for a brighter future, and share
the love of Christ through practical helps.
